Drug industry earning $1 TRILLION a year and still not curing chronic diseases: Time to make natural preventive healthcare approaches a human right!
Healthcare industry analysts IMS Health recently reported that global spending on pharmaceutical drugs exceeded an astonishing $1 trillion in 2014. Equating to around 1.3% of global GDP, this means that the amount of money earned by the drug industry in a single year now exceeds the GDPs of all but the world’s 15 wealthiest countries. Inevitably, therefore, at the very highest political levels, an income like this buys a vast amount of power and influence. As such, with drug industry annual earnings forecast to increase still further to $1.3 trillion by 2018, the need to move away from this unsustainable model and establish a new healthcare system, based upon scientific breakthroughs in the areas of nutritional and Cellular Medicine, has never been greater.
Contrary to the message pumped out to us on a daily basis by the global mass media, the reality is that the drug industry is not interested in curing diseases or enabling optimum health. To the contrary, in fact: the eradication of diseases is incompatible with, and diametrically opposed to, its interests. More than anything else, the drug industry fears the eradication of diseases as this would not only destroy its income and power base but also eliminate the need for its existence.
This is why, instead of targeting the root causes of diseases, the drug industry’s products concentrate merely upon treating symptoms. As a result, through maintaining people in a state of ill health by failing to address the causes of their diseases, and making them believe their health and lives are dependent upon taking side effect ridden pharmaceuticals on a daily basis, orthodox doctors, hospitals and their treatments have become the third leading cause of death in the United States, exceeded only by deaths from heart disease and cancer.
In this situation, there is an urgent need for health policy makers at government level to take notice of the growing evidence that daily use of nutritional supplements can reduce national healthcare costs. Building on previous work done in this area, a recent systematic review of 19 papers concluded that using supplements in community and care home settings could result in significant financial savings. Notably, the authors of this review specifically referred to the fact that many clinically relevant outcomes were reported in the papers they examined, including improved quality of life, reduced infections, reduced minor post-operative complications and reduced falls.
At the global level, the potential economic savings that can be made by moving away from the pharmaceutical model and treating the root causes of diseases are truly astronomical. For example, a study published in 2011 by the World Economic Forum (WEF) found that the total economic impact of just the five leading chronic diseases alone – cancer, diabetes, mental illness, heart disease, and respiratory disease – could reach $47 trillion by 2030. Following the publication of this study, the WEF’s senior director of health admitted publicly that this outcome would have the potential to bankrupt national healthcare systems.
Clearly, therefore, with a wealth of scientific evidence now proving that micronutrients and nutrition are of paramount importance in achieving and maintaining optimum health, the time has come for us to collectively demand of our politicians that they make natural preventive healthcare approaches a human right. Either they do this, and millions of lives and trillions of dollars will be saved, or they show that, through their continued failure to act on our behalf, they are subservient to the drug industry and effectively function as its political stakeholders. If they are truly worthy of being our elected representatives, the correct choice will be obvious to them.
