Police guard WHO official after assaults
and threats
A senior international civil servant has been attacked and threatened
with death on three continents in the past three months in what appears
to be a crude attempt to subvert his investigations into the pricing policies
of the pharmaceutical industry.

All "Statins"
We have analyzed 385 recent reports (from October 1997 through December
2000) of rhabdomyolysis (toxic destruction of muscle) in persons using
the widely-prescribed class of cholesterol lowering 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-coenzyme
A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitor drugs known as (and hereafter referred
to as) “statins” not including those in people using the recently
withdrawn Baycol (cerivastatin).

Most of the time it's discussed, it's passed off as a joke. An office
comment about cranky female staffers. A stand-up's punch line about his
emotionally-unstable wife. The stereotypical, hyper-sensitive, chocolate-seeking
bitch: PMS is cliché.

Amy And Goliath
For Amy Kapczynski, the turning point came in Durban. When she arrived
in the South African city for the World AIDS Conference last July, she
was greeted by 5,000 demonstrators demanding access to medications that
could prolong or save their lives. Blacks and whites walked side by side
-- an image of how in a country once separated by apartheid both races
have come together to fight a common enemy. They marched behind a banner
emblazoned with the words that have come to symbolize the struggle against
the deadly disease in South Africa: "Pity" crossed out, with
"Medication For All" printed beneath.
