Lutein may have role in brain health

October 27, 2014

Researchers have known for a while that getting enough lutein in your diet seems to be a good thing for eye health; people who consume more of this deep yellow pigment found in dark green leafy vegetables and brightly colored fruits are less likely to develop age-related macular degeneration, for example. But lutein may have a special role in brain health as well.

A remarkable new study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology titled, "Investigation of the effects of solid lipid curcumin on cognition and mood in a healthy older population," reveals that the primary golden-hued polyphenol found in the ancient Indian healing spice turmeric known as curcumin is capable of improving cognition and mood in elderly adults (60-85) when administered in either short-term [acute], chronic, or short-term-on-chronic dosage schedules.

War on cancer is stalling because pharmaceutical firms only create drugs they know will make a profit, leading scientist claims

October 24, 2014

By John Crawford (Photographer) [Public domain or Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons

The system for researching new cancer treatments is ‘broken’, one of Britain’s top academics has claimed. Professor Paul Workman, chief executive of the Institute of Cancer Research in London, accused ‘risk averse’ pharmaceutical firms of only developing drugs they know will turn a profit.
Read article in the Daily Mail (UK)

Comment: The so-called “war on cancer” is a fraud. Pharmaceutical companies and doctors alike know that the drugs used in chemotherapy kill not only cancer cells, but healthy ones too. As a result chemotherapy causes severe side-effects and additional diseases, including new cancers. This inevitably leads to the use of still further drugs, which in turn bring more side effects that require treatment. It’s a vicious circle and a license to print money for the pharmaceutical industry. In short, the only reason that cancer still remains a death verdict today is the billions of dollars drug companies make from selling drugs to treat it. But there is an alternative approach that can free the world from this nightmare, you can learn about it here.

Many Americans in debt, bankruptcy paying for cancer care

Besides the danger and worry from the disease itself, many Americans battling cancer are faced with high bills for medical care, two new reports show.

Comment: Cancer costs the global economy nearly $1 trillion per year. Compared to other causes of death, this makes it the single largest drain on national economies.

Pharma sales ‘will reach $1 trillion’ in 2014

September 11, 2014

Global sales in the pharmaceutical industry are set to go over the $1 trillion mark (£616 billion) this year, according to a report by Thomson Reuters.

Comment: Keep this eye-opening statistic in mind the next time anybody asks you to donate money to a medical charity that supports research into drugs to treat diseases. As a trillion-dollar-a-year industry, the pharmaceutical “business with disease” doesn’t need your money. The sooner it is replaced with a new healthcare system based on scientific breakthroughs in the areas of vitamin research and cellular health, the better it will be for all mankind.

Battling the ‘Monsanto law’ in Ghana

October 20, 2014

By USAID Africa Bureau (Corn Uploaded by Elitre) [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons

This week, farmers in Ghana are on the frontlines of a battle. The national parliament is due to return from its summer break and first thing on the agenda is the government’s Plant Breeders Bill. The proposed legislation contains rules that would restrict farmers from an age-old practice: freely saving, swapping and breeding seeds they rely on. Under the laws, farmers that use seed varieties claimed under new intellectual property rights by individuals and companies anywhere in the world risk hefty fines or even imprisonment.

Synbio – the scariest GMOs you’ve never heard of

October 9, 2014

When we think of GMOs, the first thing that comes to mind is probably a field of corn, soya or cotton. Less talked about, but the subject of intense research and development activity, is synthetic biology “synbio”.

October 23, 2014

A new study finds that most U.S. adults fail to meet recommended daily levels of 10 key nutrients, and those with disabilities have even worse nutrition than average.

Comments: Given the increasing popularity of the so-called “Western Diet”, its health consequences are rapidly becoming a global problem. Moreover, even for people who try to eat healthily, an additional problem is that studies clearly show the nutrient content of our food has fallen substantially over the past few decades.

Behind the Mask of Altruism: Imperialism, Monsanto and the Gates Foundation in Africa

October 16, 2014

Since 2006, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has funded the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) to the tune of almost $420 million. Activists from Zimbabwe, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, and Ethiopia recently attended the US-Africa Food Sovereignty Strategy Summit in Seattle to argue that the Foundation’s strategy for agriculture in Africa is a flawed attempt to impose industrial agriculture at the expense of more ecologically sound approaches.
Read article on the Centre for Research on Globalization website

Comment: The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has been described as a huge tax-avoidance scheme for super-wealthy individuals and companies who have made billions from exploiting the world’s people. As an investigation in 2007 by the Los Angeles Times showed, the Gates Foundation’s investments have included stockholdings in multi-billion dollar drug companies and other corporations that have been criticized for worsening poverty, heavy pollution and other unethical practices. In this respect, it is essentially copying a model originally designed by John D. Rockefeller a century ago. By investing in the very companies in which Gates owns millions in stocks, financial returns are guaranteed through sales and intellectual-property rights. Significantly, therefore, an analysis published in 2011 showed how several members of the Gates Foundation’s management committee, leadership teams, affiliates and major funders were members of the boards or executive branches of major drugmakers. Moreover, a close examination of its network has revealed a wide variety of links to other billionaires, multinational corporations, governments and influential international organizations.

In Cold War, U.S. Spy Agencies Used 1,000 Nazis

October 26, 2014

In the decades after World War II, the C.I.A. and other United States agencies employed at least a thousand Nazis as Cold War spies and informants and, as recently as the 1990s, concealed the government’s ties to some still living in America, newly disclosed records and interviews show.

Comment: U.S. spy agencies were by no means alone in using Nazis during the 1950s. As we show in our book, “The Nazi Roots of the ‘Brussels EU’”, the key architects of the so-called “European Union” were recruited from among the very same technocrats who had previously designed the plans for a post-WWII Europe under the control of the Nazis and the IG Farben Cartel.

The European Union’s Sham Democracy: EU Commission Instrument of Powerful Corporate Interests

October 23, 2014

The European Union’s sham democracy has again been laid bare as a result of the plenary vote of the European Parliament to approve the new Jean-Claude Juncker Commission. The previous Barroso Commission wholeheartedly served a corporate agenda. We may now expect more of the same.

Juncker u-turn puts pharma in health Commissioner's portfolio

October 22, 2014

By European People's Party (EPP Dublin Congress, 2014) [CC-BY-2.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0)], via Wikimedia Commons

Pharmaceutical drugs, and medical technology, will remain under the department of health (DG Sanco) in the next Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, the President-elect, confirmed on Wednesday (22 October).
Read article at euractiv.com

Comment: The Brussels EU Commission, the executive body of Europe, had been planning to remove responsibility for policing pharmaceutical drugs from its Health and Consumers department and give it instead to its department of Enterprise and Industry. This decision, taken by new Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker – who, despite his claims to the contrary, was not elected into the post he holds – would have definitively placed the commercial, profit-driven interests of the trillion-dollar-a-year pharmaceutical “business with disease” right at the heart of European health policy decisions. Many thanks are therefore due to everyone who supported our “Stop the Takeover of Europe by Big Pharma” campaign for putting pressure on Juncker to back down.
