Athletes competing this summer have benefited from an unlikely ingredient to fuel their Olympic and Paralympic success. Professor Andy Jones of Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Exeter has uncovered the properties of beetroot juice in boosting athletes' stamina.

In India, gift-giving drives drug makers' marketing

Sales representatives for Abbott Laboratories Inc's Indian subsidiaries know what it takes get a doctor to prescribe the drugs they market: a coffee maker, perhaps, or some cookware, or maybe a vacuum cleaner. These are among the many gifts for doctors listed in an Abbott sales-strategy guide for the second quarter of 2011, a copy of which was reviewed by Reuters. As laid out explicitly in the guide, doctors who pledge to prescribe Abbott's branded drugs, or who've already prescribed certain amounts, can expect some of these items in return.

Drug giants fined $11bn for criminal wrongdoing

The global pharmaceutical industry has racked up fines of more than $11bn in the past three years for criminal wrongdoing, including withholding safety data and promoting drugs for use beyond their licensed conditions. In all, 26 companies, including eight of the 10 top players in the global industry, have been found to be acting dishonestly.

Revealed: Monsanto GM corn caused tumors in rats

French scientists have revealed that rats fed on GMO corn sold by American firm Monsanto, suffered tumors and other complications including kidney and liver damage. When testing the firm’s top brand weed killer the rats showed similar symptoms.

The European Commission is pushing through a new Regulation that fatally weakens the way genetically modified (GM) foods are assessed for safety, according to a new report released today by Earth Open Source. The Commission’s move comes just as shocking new research has revealed that a GM maize already approved in Europe for use in food and feed, and Roundup, the weedkiller used with it, can cause tumours, premature death and organ damage at levels claimed to be safe by EU regulatory authorities.

Vitamin D deficiency increases risk of heart disease

New research from the University of Copenhagen and Copenhagen University Hospital shows that low levels of vitamin D are associated with a markedly higher risk of heart attack and early death. The study involved more than 10,000 Danes and has been published in the well-reputed American journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology.

EU ministers consider creation of European army

The Irish Times reports that the foreign ministers of 11 EU countries have called for a strengthening of European security and defence policy, including the removal of national vetoes in key areas so one country cannot block common initiatives.

Comment: Just as we predicted back in 2009, with EU ministers apparently now considering the creation of a European army, it looks increasingly likely that the assurances given to Ireland in advance of its 2009 revote on the Lisbon Treaty – that its traditional military neutrality would not be compromised – are entirely worthless.
