Pharma "Business with Disease" News

August 8, 2012

Drugs companies putting profit ahead of medical discoveries, warn scientists
The multi-billion pound pharmaceutical industry has spent the last decade developing new drugs which have produced little benefit and caused considerable harm, experts say today.
Read article in The Independent (UK)

Comment: With each passing day, the facts about the pharma industry and its "Business with Disease" are becoming known to more and more people. In this respect it is interesting to recall that, not so many years ago, Dr. Rath's analysis - that it is not in the pharma industry's financial interests to prevent common diseases, and that the maintenance and expansion of diseases is a precondition for its financial growth - may initially have seemed controversial to some. Today, however, with this reality becoming increasingly accepted by millions of people all over the world, the stage is gradually being set for the establishing of a new global healthcare system. Unlike the fraudulent "Business with Disease" and its deep-rooted ideology of Profit Over Life, this new system of healthcare will be based upon scientific breakthroughs in the areas of vitamin research and cellular health and the understanding that a chronic deficiency of micronutrients is the most frequent cause of today's most common diseases. Moreover, it will operate not in the interests of profit - but in those of the people.

Chemo 'could aid cancer growth'
Chemotherapy can backfire by helping healthy body cells to fuel treatment-resistant cancer and growth, research has shown. The surprise discovery suggests that many forms of cancer treatment can actually make the disease tougher to tackle. Almost all solid tumour cancers, such as those affecting the breast, prostate, lung and bowel, ultimately stop responding to chemotherapy.
Read news report at msn.com

Comment: Far from this being a "surprise discovery", the truth is that it has long been known that many of the drugs used in chemotherapy cause new cancers. In fact, amongst these substances are some of the most toxic chemicals known to man. The first chemotherapy drug was derived from 'mustard gas', a chemical warfare agent used in World War I as a weapon. Significantly, therefore, drug derivatives of this deadly gas are still being used in cancer patients today as mechlorethamine, cyclophosphamide, chlorambucil and ifosfamide. Disavow A Paxil Study Once And For All?
A decade ago, the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry published a paper concluding that the Paxil antidepressant, which is sold by GlaxoSmithKline, was "generally well tolerated and effective for major depression in adolescents" (here it is). But the study has since been discredited amid charges that primary and secondary outcomes were conflated, selective results were reported and ghostwriting was involved. Nonetheless, the paper has never been retracted and the universities whose academics were listed as co-authors failed to rebuke the authors.

Comment: Long-term intake of estrogen and other hormones - both as hormonal contraception and hormone replacement therapy during menopause - causes a depletion of vitamins and other cellular nutrients in the body. This is the reason why women taking these hormones have an increased risk for heart attacks, strokes and other forms of cardiovascular disease. Notably therefore, several previous studies have already shown that women taking hormonal contraceptives ("the Pill") significantly increase their risk for cardiovascular disease.

One Nation Under Drugs: How the FDA Is Sabotaging Your Health and the Environment
As a medicinal chemist, I tried to ignore my suspicion that an insidious and deliberate conspiracy to get each and every American hooked on drugs, while at the same time bankrupting them, existed between Big Pharma and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). I enjoyed my work. Drug design paid well and kept me comfortably isolated in a high-tech lab, fully equipped to help me bend and twist matter at will. The last thing I wanted to think of was a plot designed to sabotage health and wealth-while causing untold ecological damage-using my chemistry skills. But over time, experience confirmed my suspicion as fact and revealed something even scarier.

Indian parliamentary panel slams GM crops
An Indian Parliamentary panel yesterday urged the government to halt all open-field trials of transgenic crops until it develops a better system of monitoring and oversight. The panel also called for a complete overhaul of the regulatory system, saying that it "reflects a pro-industry tilt", and claiming that it is riddled with conflicts of interest.

Kevlar Tires Now Required to Traverse 'Spear-Like' GMO Crops
The news surrounding GMO crops continues to get further and further outlandish as the crops are increasingly mutated and sprayed with a medley of harshpesticides, herbicides, and insecticides. The latest news comes from an unlikely source - an automotive publication known as Autoblog. The website reports that farmers who have opted to plant Monsanto's genetically modified seeds have run into one daunting problem (outside of decreased yields and an extremely higher risk of disease): little 'spear-like' stalks from the harvested GMOs are absolutely wreaking havoc on the heavy duty tractor tires. Described by one farmer as a 'field of little spears', farmers are now turning to kevlar tires. In case you're not aware, kevlar is the same material used in bulletproof vests to protect from gun bullets.

Exposing biotech industry misinformation about GM and conventional plant breeding
The biotech companies' single biggest barrier to world domination - a form of domination in which the majority of human beings on our planet would be dependent on patented, genetically modified (GM) staple crops - is you! As a result, Monsanto and its competitors are spending millions trying to get you to change your mind. In Europe, where citizen resistance to GM has been the primary reason for the relative lack of GM food crops in the human food chain, the biotech PR machine is in overdrive to get us to accept GM as a necessary evil.

European Commission ups effort to prepare European public for GM food
The European Commission (EC) has decided that Europeans are going to eat genetically modified organisms (GMOs) - whether they want to or not. How will it achieve this? Pretend they're the same as conventional crops, and avoid precaution entirely. This madness must be stopped at all costs - and the long-standing resistance of European citizens must be respected.

What is Health Canada up to?
Since 2010, over 20,000 herbs, vitamins and food supplements have been removed from shelves in natural health stores across Canada. In some cases, SWAT teams raided the premises of Canadian naturopaths and healers and removed safe and effective healing products. Some practitioners have even been indicted and face criminal charges. As a proud Canadian, I am outraged this is happening here, enforced by the very agency mandated to protect the health and well being of Canadians. How can we justify these fascistic actions and what are the root causes?

Iron, vitamins could affect physical fitness in adolescents
Adolescence is an important time not only for growing but for acquiring healthy habits that will last a lifetime, such as choosing foods rich in vitamins and minerals, and adopting a regular exercise regimen. Unfortunately, several studies have shown that adolescents' intake of important nutrients, as well as their performance on standard physical fitness tests, has fallen in recent years. Because nutrition and fitness are intertwined-for example, iron forms part of hemoglobin, which carries oxygen to muscles, and antioxidants such as vitamin C aid in rebuilding damage after intense training-these two findings could be related. In a new study, researchers have found that adolescents' blood levels of various micronutrients are correlated with how well they performed in certain physical fitness tests.

Oil-spill dispersants may have hurt Gulf food chain, study says
A study on possible effects of the 2010 BP oil spill indicates dispersants may have killed plankton - some of the ocean's tiniest plants and creatures - and disrupted the food chain in the Gulf of Mexico, one of the nation's richest seafood grounds. Scientists who read the study said it points toward major future effects of the spill. One called its findings scary.
Read article at houmatoday.com (USA)

Comment: The largest oil spill in US history was caused by British Petroleum (BP), a prominent member of the international Oil Cartel. While the environmental disaster in the Gulf of Mexico continues, the decisive question still remains unanswered: Who benefits from this escalating crisis? In order to answer this question, one first has to understand that the very existence of the Oil Cartel is now under threat. Specifically, the survival of BP and the Oil Cartel is threatened by technological advances in the area of renewable energies and the growing determination of the people of the world to see these technologies applied on a global scale. Deepening Euro crisis could force Britain out of the EU for ever, says leading investment bank
The deepening crisis in the eurozone could see Britain quit the European Union for good, according to one of the world's leading investment banks. Japanese giant Nomura said the UK government could be forced to set a date for an in-out referendum as soon as the autumn as the single currency bloc lurches closer to disaster.
Read article in the Daily Mail (UK)

Comment: With a recent poll having shown that the British people overwhelmingly want a referendum on their relationship with the Brussels EU, and almost 100 MPs having now signed a letter to Prime Minister David Cameron demanding such a ballot, the odds are increasing that Britain may eventually strike a decisive blow for democracy by voting to leave the dictatorial construct and, through so doing, reclaim its freedom and independence.

The Criminality of Nuclear Deterrence
The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki constituted crimes against humanity and war crimes as defined by the Nuremberg Charter of August 8, 1945, and violated several basic provisions of the Regulations annexed to Hague Convention No. 4 Respecting the Laws and Customs of War on Land (1907), the rules of customary international law set forth in the Draft Hague Rules of Air Warfare (1923), and the United States War Department Field Manual 27-10, Rules of Land Warfare (1940). According to this Field Manual and the Nuremberg Principles, all civilian government officials and military officers who ordered or knowingly participated in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki could have been lawfully punished as war criminals. The start of any progress toward resolving humankind's nuclear predicament must come from the realization that nuclear weapons have never been legitimate instruments of state policy, but rather have always constituted illegitimate instrumentalities of internationally lawless and criminal behavior.

Accelerating the introduction of fuel cells and hydrogen energy systems
Five major government-backed research and development projects will speed-up the adoption of energy systems using hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, bringing them into everyday use. Funded by the UK's innovation agency, the Technology Strategy Board, and the Department of Energy and Climate Change, the projects will demonstrate the use of fuel cell systems and hydrogen technologies in low carbon energy systems and transport. They will show how these technologies can be integrated with other energy and transport components, such as renewable energy generation, refuelling infrastructure and vehicles, to develop whole systems and show them working together.
Read article at pandct.com (UK)

Comment: New sources of renewable energy are available that could essentially provide free energy to all people on our planet. The mass production of these renewable forms of energy and their provision to the people of the world will decrease global dependency on the petrochemical investment business and, ultimately, threaten its very existence.
