Increasing selenium intake may decrease bladder cancer risk
A common mineral may provide protection against bladder cancer. According to results of a study published in the September issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research, selenium intake is associated with decreased risk of bladder cancer. "The lower the levels of selenium, the higher the risk of developing bladder cancer," said lead researcher Núria Malats, M.D., Ph.D., leader of the Genetic and Molecular Epidemiology Group, Human Cancer Genetics Program, Spanish National Cancer Research Center.

Supplement produces a 'striking' endurance boost
Research from the University of Exeter has revealed taking a dietary supplement to boost nitric oxide in the body can significantly boost stamina during high-intensity exercise. The study has important implications for athletes, as results suggest that taking the supplement can allow people to exercise up to 20% longer and could produce a 1-2% improvement in race times. This comes on the back of previous research from Exeter which showed that the high nitrate content of beetroot juice, which also boosts nitric oxide in the body, has a similar effect on performance.

Comment: The study, published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, found that taking a supplement containing the amino acid L-arginine improves severe-intensity exercise endurance by 20%, significantly reduces systolic blood pressure and reduces the oxygen cost of exercise.

The great cholesterol myth
Cholesterol guidelines have been created to increase pharmaceutical profits, not to improve peoples' health. I know from my experience as a pharmaceutical sales representative for a statin drug. We were trained to emphasize to physicians the new lower LDL guidelines that were ostensibly created by health experts. The truth is the majority of the experts who created the lower guidelines have multiple financial ties to pharmaceutical companies. One expert was found to have ties to ten drug firms. There is no research that supports the assumption that lower LDL cholesterol reduces cardiovascular events or death in people who have do not already have heart disease. Statins do not prevent heart disease, but that is the myth that the drug companies have made billions of dollars from for more than 20 years. The lower guidelines simply created a larger lasso to rope more people into buying statin drugs.

Comment: The pharmaceutical industry’s entire multi-billion dollar cholesterol business is built on fear – the fear that cholesterol causes heart attacks. While this scare has become a gold mine for the drug makers, the economic burden of this business is ultimately carried by us, the people. To learn the facts about statins, click here. To learn how, in reality, coronary heart disease occurs for precisely the same reason that clinical (early) scurvy does – a deficiency of vitamin C in the cells composing the artery wall – click here.

Monsanto in Gates' Clothing? The Emperor's New GMOs
If you had any doubts about where the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is really placing its bets, AGRA Watch's recent announcement of the Foundation's investment of $23.1 million in 500,000 shares of Monsanto stock should put them to rest. Genetic engineering: full speed ahead. If you are one of those people who believes the axiom that Monsanto is the farmer's friend (and the corollary, that its climate-ready, bio-fortified GMOs can save the world from hunger) you will not be surprised, disappointed, or find any conflict of interest in this investment. But if you are part of the growing population who gets their information about GMOs from scientists who are not beholden to corporate funding, has a problem with anti-trust issues, or is getting queasy about the increasing monopoly power of philanthropy capital... it's time to say the Emperor has no clothes. Under the guise of "sustainability" the Foundation has been spearheading a multi-billion dollar effort to transform Africa into a GMO-friendly continent.

Comment: The brutal colonialism imposed upon Africa in previous decades has been replaced in recent years by more subtle forms of suppression. In this respect, the intention to open the African seed market to multinational GMO corporations such as Monsanto is but one of many colonialist methodologies being employed. Another is that of pharmaceutical colonialism, whereby pharmaceutical multinationals are using Africa as a testing ground and multi-billion market place for toxic and often deadly drugs. Bill Gates, chairman of Microsoft, and his Foundation have a long history of making investments in industries such as these, thus placing, as the LA Times has described it, a ‘dark cloud’ over their claims to be performing good works.

China goes organic after scandal of cooking oil from sewers
Organic food sales have taken off in China after a series of safety scares, including the disclosure that one in 10 meals is cooked using oil dredged from the sewer. The Chinese now consume more than twice as much organic food as health-conscious Japan. The market is worth an annual 10billion yuan (£1billion) having quadrupled in the past five years. For comparison, the British organic market is worth roughly £2billion. Interest has been promoted by a series of scares including toxic beans, contaminated milk and pork, pesticide-laced dumplings, chemically-tainted chicken, and the growing presence of what is known as “sewage oil”. Night soil collectors typically visit the drains behind restaurants late at night to scoop up dregs of oil, which they filter and resell.

Government should recommend organic to cut chemical exposure — OTA
The Organic Trade Association (OTA) is calling on the US Government to revise national dietary guidelines to encourage people seeking to minimize their exposure to toxic chemicals to choose organic. The call comes just weeks after a report from the influential President’s Cancer Panel said that eating foods grown without pesticides was one practical way to reduce environmental cancer risk. The report added that exposure to antibiotics and growth hormones could be similarly “minimized by eating free-range meat raised without these medications.”

EU popularity plunges right across the bloc
People's confidence in the the European Union has dropped to record lows in most countries amid a placid response to the rising unemployment and the troubles of the eurozone, a Eurobarometer published on Thursday (26 August) shows. Fewer than half of Europe's citizens (49 percent) think that their country has benefited from EU membership – a seven-year low - while trust in the bloc's institutions has dropped to 42 percent, six points down compared to autumn 2009. The survey was carried out in May, at the peak of the sovereign debt crisis affecting Greece and the whole eurozone and amid hikes in unemployment all across the continent. The EU's image worsened dramatically in Greece, Cyprus, Portugal, Spain, Romania, Italy and Luxembourg – where confidence in EU institutions fell by 10 to 18 percent compared to the previous year.

Comment: Astonishingly, despite the severe blow that this survey dealt to the bloc’s credibility, the European Commission is attempting to present the results as an endorsement for concentrating even more powers in the Brussels EU. For example, it is claiming that 75 percent of citizens in the EU said they were in favour of "stronger European economic governance," with EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding even pretending that "the clear majority for enhanced European economic governance shows that people see the EU as a decisive part of the solution to the crisis". In reality, however, the question asked in the survey didn't even include the term "European economic governance", nor did it make any specific reference to the EU's role in overseeing national economies. Instead, it merely included a vague reference to "stronger coordination of economic and financial policies among all EU member states". Clearly, therefore, with the Commission now desperately engaging in spin to massage even the results of its own surveys, there can be no doubt that we are witnessing the beginning of the end for the Brussels EU.

Fury as EU envoy to the US says: I speak for Britain
Europe’s desperate power grab was illustrated last night after the new EU ambassador to Washington suggested he will speak for Britain in America. Joao Vale de Almeida, formally installed in his job this week, said he could advise on foreign and military policy. He is the first EU ambassador to be appointed after the Lisbon Treaty gave the EU sweeping new foreign policy powers. The Portuguese-born diplomat said he would be “leading the show” among European representatives in Washington and had “a wider mandate” than any of his predecessors. Asked about former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger’s famous question: “When I want to talk to Europe, who do I call?’’ Mr Vale de Almeida said: “In this area code, you call me.”
